In a very short period of time, weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have transformed some people's weight loss journey. They have been able to provide users freedom from slavishly following diets, the effects of which often don't last long term.
In this post, I will cover the advantages of the medications for users but also the additional support that is needed to maintain health whilst using them and prevent weight regain when coming off them.
What weight loss medications do: The medications reduce appetite and cravings by mimicking the role of GLP-1 a hormone our body produces naturally, mostly from our large intestines. They also slow down the passage of food through the digestive system, which again sends signals to the brain that the user of the medication is full and doesn't need to eat.
This can result in complete cessation in food cravings and freedom from constantly thinking about food. In many cases, users are also seeing a reduction in alcohol intake, and they have been shown to reduce addictive behaviours.
What weight loss medications don't do: Although one part of the weight loss picture, the medications won't necessarily mean you start making healthier foods choices, or alter your lifestyle choices. You may not feel able to eat enough to get the nutrition your body needs.
All of the scientific studies show that nutrition and exercise changes are vital in supporting the efficacy of the medications.
Recent large scale British studies have shown that due to significantly reduced food intake, between 20 - 40% of the weight lost is coming from bone and muscle mass, not just fat.
Additionally, just like any other dietary restriction, weight rebound is highly likely once stopped. So far, research indicates all weight may be regained within 14 months, if nutrition and exercise changes haven't been made whilst on the medication.
Nourish and Maintain Collective: These are the reasons I am launching my online support programme. To help medication users stay healthy whilst using them and avoid weight rebound if stopping them.
